Many types of home can use a heat pump, but suitability depends on a room-by-room design, practical space and the temperatures needed to keep the home comfortable.

Which home facts shape suitability?

The important facts are design heat loss in each room, the output available from radiators or underfloor heating, electrical supply, outdoor-unit siting, pipe routes, hot-water needs and space. Property type or age alone does not give a reliable yes or no.

Does the home need to be perfectly insulated?

No universal insulation level proves or prevents suitability. Reducing avoidable heat loss can improve comfort, allow lower heating temperatures and reduce energy demand. Some homes can be designed first and improved in stages; others benefit from practical fabric work before equipment is sized. Moisture and ventilation must be considered with draught-proofing.

What evidence should an assessment provide?

Ask an MCS-certified installer for room-by-room heat-loss calculations, emitter checks, proposed flow temperatures, hot-water arrangements, outdoor-unit location and designed seasonal performance assumptions. Compare written designs, not only equipment brands or promised savings. Planning, listed-building and leasehold constraints may also need separate checks.
