Can a heat pump use your existing radiators?
A heat pump can often use some existing radiators, but each room needs an output check at the proposed lower flow temperature; visual size alone is not enough.
Why does flow temperature change the answer?
Radiators release less heat when the water through them is cooler. Heat pumps are generally more efficient at lower flow temperatures, so the designer balances emitter size, room heat loss and operating temperature. An existing radiator may already be large enough in one room but not another.
What should the installer calculate?
The design should show each room’s heat loss and each emitter’s output at the proposed temperatures. Possible responses include keeping a radiator, fitting a larger or additional radiator, using a fan-assisted emitter, or reducing the room’s heat loss. Pipework and hydraulic balance also matter.
Can you test anything before replacing the boiler?
In suitable weather, a heating professional may help test comfort with the current boiler set to a lower flow temperature. That can reveal useful information but is not a substitute for design calculations: outdoor conditions, controls and boiler behaviour affect the result.
