When is a repair a credible first step?

A repair quote is useful when the boiler can be inspected safely, the fault is specific, parts are available and the rest of the system is serviceable. Ask the engineer to separate diagnosis, parts and labour, and to explain whether the repair addresses the cause or only a symptom. Gas and LPG work must use a Gas Safe registered engineer; use an appropriately registered technician for other fuels.

When should replacement enter the comparison?

Compare replacement when breakdowns repeat, one expensive repair follows another, essential parts are obsolete, or the boiler and controls are inefficient as a system. Age is context rather than an automatic cut-off. Include flue, condensate, controls, system cleaning and any cylinder work in quotes so “boiler price” is not mistaken for the installed total.

What should happen before you commit?

Get a written diagnosis and more than one scoped quote where time and safety allow. Also decide whether this is the right moment to assess a heat pump; replacing like for like can defer that choice for years. No online answer can confirm that a boiler is safe or economically repairable.
